SunFarmer Nepal Pvt. Ltd: 9.45 kWp Community Solar Water Pumping Project- Salang, Dhading
The community of small village in remote part of Aaruvastar, Salang, Dhading relies on farming to sustain their livelihood. The village is situated on a dry hill, and the only feasible crop in those parched land is corn. The Solar Water Pump Project will help the farmer in the village to produce variety of crops throughout the year.
SunFarmer, in partnership with Practical Action, Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihoods (RERL)/AEPC and Sana Kisan Agricultural Cooperative (Sana Kisan), aims to create much needed access to solar pumping irrigation services for a group of twenty (20) farmers in a small village of Dhading district through innovation in technology, finance and long-term service commitments. The model serves as a platform to bring together multiple stakeholders to accelerate the commercialization of solar-powered irrigation.
The 9.45 kWp solar powered irrigation infrastructure supplies 59,000 liters of water daily, irrigating over 30525 square meters of land and serving 20 households. It is expected to increase their income by up to 300%.

The project agricultural land is near to Trishuli river, still the community is lacking from irrigation facilities because the location of area is higher in altitude then the Trisuli River. Even though agriculture is the main occupation, farmers are compelled to do one crop farming due to lack of year round irrigation. The targeted land depends only on monsoon rain (rain-fed upland farms) which leads to low productivity thus low annual income. The community is doing conventional farming due to lack of knowledge and technology in modern farming. Since Agriculture is the main source of their livelihood people are not able to maintain their economy.
Use of water lifting pumps can ensure year-round irrigation resulting multi-crop production in such locations. However, the technologies are not being adopted at scale due to lack of adequate information on its cost and benefit. Higher demand in lifting irrigation form the community generated the idea of the Solar Lift Irrigation Project in Aruvastar Village.
The project is structured in a multi-stakeholder model where Practical Action and Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihoods (RERL)/AEPC provided subsidy, the community made a modest upfront payment and the remaining amount was financed by SunFarmer and Sana Kisan Agricultural Cooperative for 5 years. A multiparty Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) agreement has been signed between the community, SunFarmer and Cooperative after which SunFarmer installed the system and will provide 5-year system performance guarantee. The community will pay Sana Kisan, the cooperative, in monthly installments over a 5 year period at the rate specified in the PPA agreement making it affordable system. This model is sustainable and scalable long-term.
Since solar water pumping is a new technology for these farmers, SunFarmer Nepal and team spent several weeks interacting with the community to show them the technology and ensure the project had full support from the community. Once the community approved the project and the team was satisfied with the credit checks, SunFarmer Nepal installed the solar energy system! In addition, Practical Action provided training on efficient water use and agricultural methods to maximize their benefit from the solar water pumping system.
