Energypedia.info is a wiki-based platform for collaborative knowledge exchange on renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy access issues in the context of developing countries. As a wiki-based platform, any registered users can easily create, modify and share content on energypedia.
The platform currently consist of more than 4000 articles which are composed by more than 7000 registered users. These articles are further grouped into 13 portals, namely Solar, Hydro, Bioenergy, Wind, Improved Cooking, Productive Use, Mobility, Impacts, Grid, Mini-grid, Financing & Funding, Powering Agriculture and Country Energy Situation. Along with these portals, the platform also hosts 8 databases on different topics ranging from project-relevant documents to fuels prices and latest jobs, events or opportunities in the renewable sector.
The fact that the platform is visited per month by more than 45,000 unique visitors (from more than 232 countries) and on average 9,000 documents are downloaded per month is a testimony to the popularity and the usefulness of the platform. With the motto “Power to the people”, energypedia strives to promote knowledge creation and exchange on renewable energy and energy efficiency topics in the context of development cooperation.
Up to now, little effort has been made to share knowledge about renewable energy access and energy efficiency topics in the development context. Besides conferences or workshops, there are few possibilities for practitioners, experts and scientists to exchange experiences, new findings and lessons learnt regarding sustainable energy access. Similarly, first-hand knowledge on modern and sustainable energy solutions often only exists locally or in fragments and thus is difficult for individuals to access. Therefore, energypedia addresses this problem by providing free access to expert information on renewable energy, energy access and energy efficiency projects in developing countries.
Energypedia address this problem by providing a global platform for knowledge creation and exchange. On energypedia.info, all users can document their experiences, best practices and failure studies, which can then be accessed by other users. This prevents energy practitioners from reinventing the wheel and enables them to learn from others' experiences.
Similarly, energypedia collaborates with other international organizations and networks such as ESMAP program of the World Bank, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and UN Practitioner Network, to create new knowledge products as well as to raise awareness/advocate for renewable energy. Our knowledge products also focuses on highlighting the work done on energy practitioners at ground level.
