Matribhumi Urja Pvt. Ltd.: Establishment of Improved Cook Stove Installation Training Centre in Nepal
Stage of Business:
Matribhumi Urja has variety of bio-mass products that have been tested in the lab and used in more than 12,000 houses, 100 institutions, and 20 industries. There is a need to install the clean cook stoves in 4 million houses in Nepal alone. Our product being locally produced and highly efficient (Renewable Energy Test Station certified) we focus on growth through training more community members, producing Improved Cook Stove (ICS) burners, installing them in more houses and creating livelihood in the society.
Activities at Matribhumi Urja:
1. Production and Improvement of ASDB, dies and frames: ASDB is produced in a local factory from scrap iron through sand casting process. Post processing is done at its workshop after production. Products are continuously improved through research, re-design and iteration.
2. Training and workshop: Matribhumi Urja is producing skilled manpower by providing training to make mud stoves in the communities.
3. Installation of Improved mud stoves with ASDB.
The final beneficiaries are the local community people using firewood as bio fuel. Health benefits to groups who are most likely to be affected by excessive smoke from firewood: women who regularly spend time around smoke during household chore, infants, sick and elderly people. The wise execution project would benefit the whole ecosystem of bio-mass energy sector.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who has this problem?
Out of 83% of total population of Nepal who live in rural areas, 73% depends upon firewood as cooking fuel. Among those, around 80% are prone to severe health effect from smoke and indoor pollution. This results in 19,533 deaths that include 4,524 child deaths. Matribhumi’s ICS can bring drastic change in their life as clean cook stove contributes in lowering indoor pollution and decreasing firewood consumption by more than 60%. In the other hand, thousands of people would get employment opportunities for the installation of these efficient cook stove in their communities as well as by being trainer.
Matribhumi is a company driven by innovation and motivation for a social change. Installation of stove alone creates livelihood for community people unlike others who make earning by installation of stoves. Matribhumi produces Air Supply Disc (installed in a cook stove) that saves peoples’ health through efficient combustion and reduction of indoor pollution. We have reputation and recognition amongst government bodies, NGO/INGOs, social service organizations and have been rewarded with different National level technology, innovation and social impact awards. Our certified efficiency test result, social cause, and local innovation stands us different from other mass.
Market offers three different types of cook stoves: Rocket stove, Portable stove, and chimney based mud stove. While first two are imported by the suppliers and distributed, some suppliers locally install mud stove as well. Besides being very expensive, imported cook stoves are hard to maintain and are under-sized for Nepali type of kitchen. Hence making the former two types lest preferred ones. And the suppliers who install mud stove using grates (to increase efficiency) has to compete over Matribhumi’s patented ASDB which offers advantages over thermal efficiency, firewood consumption, installation capacity and indoor pollution.
