Nizam Bijli : Pay-As-You-Go Solar Home Systems
Every 6th person in the world does not have access to any source of electricity. That means they survive on kerosene, firewood, or other inefficient means to light up their houses, travel miles to charge mobile phones. Nearly 15% of their monthly income goes to lighting, not only is their current source inefficient, expensive, does not help in adding productive hours but also harmful to their health. As Nizam Energy, a traditional rooftop solar company grew, it fast realized the pressing concern of energy access ever present in developing countries. For that reason it created a subsidiary: Nizam Bijli thats sole purpose is to provide electricity to those suffering from energy access. Our solution to the energy access problem lies in decentralized solar energy that is provided in a pay-as-you-go model to make it affordable. With the rise of GSM, we can intelligently monitor, and even shut off our devices due to non payment, predict default, perform after sales service effectively and get payments via mobile money.
Nizam Bijli provides affordable solar power to households and businesses in off-grid or semi-grid regions of Pakistan. Local field officers sell and install solar home systems (SHSs) with GSM connectivity that enables remote usage control and monitoring.
Nizam Bijli operates a lease-to-own model. Revenue is derived from sales of our SHS package, comprised of a built in battery with charge controller and a solar 150W solution with lighting, fan, television, and mobile charging features.
Nizam Bijli has electrified over 800 rural households since mid-2016. We now operate 10 shops with over 250 locally recruited staff. Our sales management brings extensive experience managing local teams in rural areas. The combination of local knowledge, management expertise, and habitual reflection upon operational learnings allow us to consistently refine and scale our operations.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who has this problem?
Energy access is a global problem, nearly 1.3 billion people lack access to electricity and another 2 billion do not have reliable electricity. Studies from the UN show a very high correlation the human development index and what level of the energy ladder the household has. Lack of electricity presents other problems, such as livelihood conditions due to less productive hours due to no light. This global problem is ever present in Pakistan with more than 144 million people not having reliable access to electricity. These numbers are provided by the IFC which states 11 million households that suffer from more than 12 hours of black outs per day. More than 10 million that live off-grid, meaning no access to the national electric grid. Grid connectivity is very expensive to provide to people who are sparsely populated and their consumption is so low that it is not feasible to stretch the national grid. Like many other countries Pakistan also has a shortage of nearly 5 GW in Peak season, therefore industries and major cities are given preference to provide power leaving the rural areas with an unstable grid.
Nizam Bijli amplifies access to electricity by providing smart and affordable energy solutions to those who need it most via easy financing for expanded service. We believe electricity is a fundamental right. No matter who you are, where you are, and what you do. You deserve electricity. We aim to electrify 1 million people by providing them safe, reliable and affordable electricity by 2021.
Our work is primarily in the rural areas; the government, due to the low return of economic development, has neglected such areas. Providing decentralized energy is cheaper, more reliable and gives them a chance to have more productive hours everyday. From being able to work or study at night, or not having to worry about purchasing firewood, batteries or kerosene to have light at night. Most of the population living so far off the grid, do not have equal economic opportunities, are unbanked and at the very bottom of the pyramid. Having such opportunity gives them more of an equal chance to grow socially and economically. Working in a particular area, we believe that local employment is the core way to succeed.
Nizam Bijli sells affordable solar energy solutions to off-grid and under-served people, even in the most remote areas of Pakistan. Nizam Bijli works with an ecosystem of sales agents, installers and village-level entrepreneurs to ensure the solar home systems (SHS) work for the customers.
These solar energy solutions are delivered in a Pay-As-You-Go model in which the SHS is paid off in monthly installments through the integration of mobile money. Once the customer completes their monthly installment plan of 16 months, they become the owner of the SHS.
The Pay-As-You-Go is an affordable concept similar to that of pre-paid cell phone, with the only difference that Nizam Bijli provides electricity rather than airtime. The product comprises of a smart battery box wired to a solar PV 150W solution offering fan, lighting, and mobile charging. In comparison to our competitors, Nizam Bijli’s solution offers more hours because of a larger battery, and with it’s rent-to-own model, enables customers to own the system after the monthly installments are completed. Customers also have an ease of mind as the product is backed by a repair or replace warranty combined with an in house support team that works around the clock to ensure functionality.
