Cygni Energy Private Limited: Solar DC Microgrids
CYGNI ENERGY PRIVATE LIMITED is on a mission to “Power a Billion Dreams” by venturing into new solar solutions based on Technology and Innovation. CYGNI is an incubatee of IIT Madras Incubation Cell and Rural Technology Business Incubator (RTBI), India.
Cygni has developed this Solar-DC Inverterless controller product. This has Solar, Battery and Grid (optional) as energy source and generates 48V DC. Cygni, along with its DC consortium partners, have also developed several 48V DC based appliances, including Tubelight, Bulbs, Ceiling Fan, Mobile Charger, Television, Mixer/Grinder, Computer, Laptop Adapter, Desert Cooler etc.
CYGNI has been working on developing systems that enable the implementation of the Solar-DC Technology and has developed products in the following 2 verticals: A) Inverterless Solar-DC 48V Solution for off-grid and near-off-grid homes. B) Inverterless solution for Offices and Commercial Complexes. CYGNI ENERGY is the first company to get selected under “Start-up India” scheme, initiated by Government of India.
CYGNI has developed the Inverterless Solar-DC Controller. It comes in 2 variants. One for power levels from 125W to 500W that can support from 1 to 4 homes. Other for power levels from 2.4kW to 7.2kW which can support commercial establishments including hospitals, primary health centers, educational centers and other small businesses.
Some of the accolades won by CYGNI are: 1) Smart Green Technology Award, jointly instituted by The Economic Times and Saint-Gobain in Dec 2015. 2) Invited to present a paper on “Economic Analysis of deployment of DC power and appliances along with solar in urban multi-storied buildings” in the IEEE International Conference on DC Microgrids at Atlanta, the USA in June 2015. 3) Won the ISBA Award in 2015-16. 4) In-house R&D centre is recognized by GOI, Ministry of Science and Technology, DSIR, New Delhi, India.
What problem are you trying to solve? Who has this problem?
The two global energy trends are distributed energy generation through rooftop solar and savings through energy efficiency. Most of the appliances in homes and offices have moved towards DC (like LED for lighting, Brushless DC motors for fans, refrigerators, coolers, All electronic devices like mobile phones, laptops, LED/LCD TV’s are already running on DC).
With the advent of rooftop solar and battery, generation and storage is also in DC. But our existing solutions are such that we are force-fitting ourselves with AC in our homes and offices. This results to way too many, inefficient, power wasting AC-DC and DC-AC conversions.
Cygni has been working on the Solar-DC technology and have built controllers, which integrate with solar, battery and DC appliances without any intermediate conversions. It also seamlessly integrates with grid. Our ERA controller is for homes; apartments and small offices that can provide DC power upto 500 watts. Our DASH controller is for commercial complexes, offices, educational institutes etc that can power upto 2400 watts and multiples thereof (modular design).
Our Solar-DC solution is more efficient and economical. It results in a much smaller solar footprint and storage capacity for the same load requirement and hence the return on investment is much quicker than a traditional solar AC system.
Cygni’s Main Focus is on Village Electrification. Cygni’s unique focus is on residential homes currently with no access to electricity. Market estimation is >$1 billion in India alone.

Rayasam Sasidhar, General Manager - R&D
· Mr Sasidhar (Sasi) is the General Manager – R&D at Cygni. Sasi has over 15 years of experience in design and development of products for telecom, infra and power sectors. He was associated in the past with Enersys Astra Limited, CMC and ICSA India Ltd in various senior technical positions. Sasi has a B.Tech degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Rahul Saraogi, Director

Venkat Rajaraman, CEO
· Venkat is the Founder/CEO of Cygni and an Advisory Committee member of National Center for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE), India. He has over 20 years of experience in Product Design and Engineering Management. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Su-Kam Power Systems, a leading power back-up and RE solution provider from India. Earlier to moving to renewable energy space, he was the Vice President of Engineering at Portal Player, a company that was acquired by NVIDIA Corp in Jan 2007. He worked at Sun Microsystems, USA. He has BE degree from Madurai-Kamaraj University and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Ashok Jhunjhunwala (Principal Advisor, Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, New Delhi, India and Professor IIT Madras (on Sabbatical))
· Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala is now Principal Advisor to Ministry of Power and New and Renewable Energy, Government of India and also a Professor (on sabbatical) at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras India. He received a B.Tech degree from IIT, Kanpur, and M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of Maine, USA. He has been a member of the faculty at IIT, Madras since 1981 and Department Chair until recently. Professor Jhunjhunwala has the unique distinction among academics for combining innovations in technology and business incubation with the social goal of sustainable development in India.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala leads the Telecommunications and Computer Networks Group (TeNeT) of IIT Madras faculty whose members have been working closely with industry in the development of a number of products suitable for developing countries using affordable technologies for more than a decade.
Dr. Jhunjhunwala has been instrumental in setting up IITM's Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) that functions as a formal technology incubator to design, pilot and incubate scalable rural inclusive business ventures. Dr. Jhunjhunwala is Chairman of RTBI.
Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala has been the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri Award by the Government of India in the year 2002. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister of India (SAC-PM).
